Belize Tourist SIM Cards

A local SIM card can be a cost-effective way to get data and local calls while in Belize. Unlike an eSIM, you'll need to find and buy a physical card, but local plans can offer more data or better rates for longer stays. Here's what to know before you go.

Where to buy a SIM card in Belize

  • At BZE airport. SIM cards are often available at or near the airport on arrival. Availability and hours vary, so don't rely on this as your only option.
  • In town. Local carrier stores and some convenience shops sell prepaid SIMs in Belize City, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, San Ignacio, and other tourist areas.
  • Before you travel. Some services let you order a Belize SIM in advance and have it shipped to your US address, so it's ready when you land. Ask us about current options.

What you need to buy and activate

  • An unlocked phone. Your phone must be unlocked from your US carrier. If it's locked, a local SIM won't work. See our pre-arrival checklist for how to check.
  • A passport or ID. Belize may require SIM registration with identification, similar to many countries. Have your passport handy when purchasing.
  • A few minutes for setup. Activation times vary — some carriers activate instantly, others may take longer. Ask the seller to confirm it's working before you leave.

When a local SIM makes sense

A local SIM is worth considering if you're staying longer, need local voice calls, or want more data than a typical travel eSIM offers. For shorter trips, an eSIM may be faster to set up. Not sure which is right for you? Compare both options in our eSIM vs local SIM guide.

Things to watch out for

  • Coverage varies by carrier and region. Not all carriers have equal coverage across Belize. Check our coverage guide for what to expect at your destination.
  • Top-up availability. You may need to top up data during your trip. Ask about top-up methods when you buy, and top up before heading to remote areas.
  • Plan terms change. Data allowances, pricing, and plan details change frequently. Confirm current options before you rely on any specific plan.
