Setting Up Mobile Data Before You Arrive in Belize
A little preparation before you fly can save you from standing at the airport with no data, no maps, and no way to call your hotel. Follow this checklist to make sure your phone is ready before you land in Belize.
Pre-departure checklist
Check phone compatibility & unlock status
Confirm your phone supports eSIM (if you plan to use one) and that it's unlocked from your US carrier. If locked, request an unlock now — it can take a few days.
Decide on your connectivity approach
Compare eSIM, local SIM, and roaming based on your trip length, data needs, and destinations. Not sure? See our eSIM vs local SIM comparison or ask us for a personalized recommendation.
Set up your chosen option
If using an eSIM, purchase and install it before you travel. If using roaming, confirm your plan and add a travel pass if needed. If using a local SIM, note where to buy one at BZE or in town.
Download offline backups
Download offline maps for your destinations, save key contacts and addresses, and screenshot important booking confirmations. Don't rely on having data the moment you land.
Know what to do at BZE
On arrival, turn on data roaming (if your plan is ready), activate your eSIM, or head to a shop to buy a local SIM. If nothing works, find Wi-Fi at the airport and reach out to us for help.
If you're using an eSIM
Buy and install your eSIM plan at home — most providers send a QR code or app link after purchase. The plan stays inactive until you land in Belize and toggle it on. This means you can set everything up days before your trip. See our full eSIM guide for details.
If you're using roaming
Call your US carrier before you travel to confirm international roaming is enabled and add a travel pass if needed. Keep data roaming turned off on your phone until you've confirmed your plan — this prevents accidental charges. See our US roaming guide for more.
If you're buying a local SIM
You can't set up a local SIM before you travel, but you can prepare: note where to buy one at BZE airport or in town, confirm your phone is unlocked, and have your passport ready for registration. See our tourist SIM card guide for details.
What to do when you land at BZE
- Turn on your phone and wait for it to connect to a local network.
- If using an eSIM, toggle it on in your phone's cellular settings.
- If using roaming, enable data roaming and confirm your plan is active.
- If buying a local SIM, look for a carrier shop or kiosk at the airport.
- If nothing works, find Wi-Fi at the airport and contact us — we'll help you troubleshoot.
